The general aim of the study is to deepen the knowledge about teacher s work during a period of change and to identify and analyze themes which structure and The approach of the study could be characterized as interpretative.Interpretation refers to a specific attitude to the study of the social world and confronts directly the way individuals subjective world is manifested.A study of the social world relates interpretations to the daily situations in which people live and work.The physical space of the study was the Finnish comprehensive school.Within this context the study was specified to comprise class-teachers teaching 7-13 years old students in the primary stage of the comprehensive school.The study was planned and its first phase of collecting empirical data started in 1992 when 19 class-teachers were interviewed.On two later occasions in 1994, 17 and 34 class-teachers respectively, were interviewed.This report covers the teachers being interviewed in November 1992.The class-teachers description of their work was related to four fields: the individual, the action, the social, and the context.In class-teachers conceptualizing the characteristics of their work were types of phenomena and types of individual characteristics identified.Types of phenomena: A systematizied cooperation with colleagues was limited.Teachers marked their territory in relation to parents.The attitude towards the local school government was linked to teachers view of the government s engagement and will to interact.From teachers description of the work appeared a form of competence which has been labelled as traditional .The notion socialisation of adjustment has been used to characterize teachers description of their teaching attitude.Types of individual characteristics: The need for autonomous acting was emphasized.Teachers felt that the work included phenomena which created a fundamental experience of uncertainty.Teachers use of language was more similar to an amateur s than to a professional s.Teachers had a tendency to mediate an idealistic and touched up picture of the school.
